Solvent vs solventless

Solvent-based concentrates — shatter, budder, live resin — use butane or propane to strip cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant, then purge the solvent off under vacuum. They are efficient, potent and consistent. Solventless concentrates — rosin, hash, kief — use heat, pressure, ice water or agitation instead of solvents. They are usually more expensive per gram and often more flavourful because nothing is stripped out that was not physically separated.

What you need to enjoy them

Concentrates need heat you can control. That usually means a dab rig with a quartz banger and an e-nail or a butane torch, or an electronic dab device with preset temperatures. If you would rather stay with familiar tools, dust kief on top of a bowl of Flower or twist a small amount of hash into a pre-roll — both work well and require no new gear beyond what is already on our Accessories page.

Dosing

The single biggest mistake with concentrates is starting too big. A grain-of-rice-sized dab from an 80% THC live resin is a meaningful dose. Start smaller than you think, wait a full minute for the effect, then decide.
